After a highly successful 2 years, Callum Emery has made the difficult decision to step down from his roles of Director of Rugby and Head Coach.
Emery took up the role of Head Coach in September 2023, shortly after Dearne Valley RUFC was formed. During it's inaugural year he led the club to an unbeaten season in the South Yorkshire Merit Table. With playing numbers growing along with the appetite for competitive rugby, the club embarked on a new journey for 2024/25 with entry into the RFU Northern Division and Counties 4 Yorkshire South.
Success continued on the field for Emery and Dearne Valley, with the club clinching promotion from Counties 4 Yorkshire South and the 2024/25 league title with 3 games to spare. They ended the year 19 points clear of their nearest rivals, remaining unbeaten at home and running in an impressive 88 tries in 15 league games whilst having the best defensive record in the league too.
Off the field, Emery has been instrumental in pushing the club forwards. His role as Director of Rugby incorporated a wide variety of tasks and he has often gone above and beyond to ensure that the club is constantly moving forward. He has been pivotal in driving standards from the outset, creating a professional environment for amateur players and doing everything possible to make players feel part of an environment that encouraged them to reach their potential.
Emery will now be taking some time away from Rugby to concentrate on his home and family life. However, he has left the door open for a return to the club and rugby in the future.
Club Chairman, Ant Hamilton, commented “We can’t thank Callum enough for all of his hard work over the last two years. Clearly the success on the field speaks for itself; an unbeaten Merit Table Campaign and a League Title and promotion in our first season in the Yorkshire Leagues.”
He added “What Callum has done at the club is about much more than just the on-field success, he has been a driver in setting the club culture and standards and has helped assemble the amazing group of players and volunteers we have put together with nothing ever been too much for him. He’s been down at the club setting up changing rooms, managing social media, clipping videos for analysis, working with players 1-1 away from training, marking out the lines on the pitch, and he’s even been known to jump on the tractor to cut the grass on a Friday evening!”
“I am sure we will continue to see Callum and his family at the club regularly, but his presence in the changing rooms and behind the scenes will be sorely missed. As a small way of saying thank you, we have made Callum our first ever Vice President which will allow him to remain involved in the club that he has been instrumental in building’’.
Callum Emery commented “I am pleased with what we have achieved at Dearne Valley RUFC during my time at the club. Most of all I would like to thank the players, many of whom are close friends, for their commitment and buying into the vision that I had for the team back in 2023. I wish them success moving forwards and take a step away knowing that the foundations are in place to ensure a bright future ahead.”
