Director of Rugby, Steve Mason, has wasted no time in picking his choice for captain for the new season and has appointed popular scrum half, Alex Roebuck to the role.
He takes over from Ben Hartley, who did an outstanding job last terms and was instrumental in the clubs winning Counties 4 Yorkshire at the first time of asking.
Roebuck joined Dearne Valley in the summer of 2024, from local neighbours Wath RUFC. He had previously played in the Doncaster Junior section and represented South Yorkshire at Age Grade level. Last years title winning season added to his previous successes which includes two South Yorkshire Trophy wins and a promotion from Yorkshire 2.
Last term Roebuck quickly established himself as the starting scrum half at the club, making the nine shirt his own throughout the year. Roebucks leadership qualities shone through and he was deservedly named Most Valuable Player at the end of season Awards Night. He played in all but two of Dearne’s Counties 4 fixtures, playing a central role in the way the team played and was instrumental in the club claiming promotion to Counties 3.
Director of Rugby, Steve Mason, commented “Firstly I would like to thank Ben for everything he did last year. He did a fantastic job and led the charge at the title from the front. His circumstances are changing this year, but he has set a high bar for the captains role for all future incumbents and will remain a big part of the club moving forward.”
Speaking on Roebucks appointment, he added “Alex’s leadership qualities started to shine through as the season progressed last year, he is certainly a natural leader. He has a drive for better, constantly strives for excellence and is key in instilling that across the playing group.”
“He was deserved of the recognition he received at the end of last season and I want him to continue on the same path this year. He is adaptable and can react to what is in front of him, with a high level of rugby intelligence, and is well respected across the team. I have no doubt he will continue to drive the team forward and will be able to build on the standards and momentum built by Ben”.
Speaking about his appointment, new 1st XV Captain, Alex Roebuck commented “Ben did a great job last year and I to continue to push the club forward. I’m buzzing to get started. We have a great group of lads at Dearne, there is something special about this club. We know it’s going to be a tough season in Yorkshire 3 and there will be a big step up in standard, but I can’t wait for us to show everyone what we are made of and what great rugby we play”.
